Annotation Asparagus brachyphyllus Turcz. is a rare species recorded in the «Red Book of the Russian Federation» (2008) and in the «Red Book of the Chita Oblast and Aginsky Buryat Autonomous Okrug» (2002). In Russia, it is found on the natural habitat border and grows only in Eastern Zabailakye. The article presents the morphological structure of A. brachyphyllus. Leaves’ reduction, presence of awl-shaped cladodes and perennial rhizome are adaptation signs to arid conditions. The anatomical structure of cladodes reveals xeromorphic properties. Epidermis is covered with a cuticle layer, two rows of columnar mesophyll are densely layered and don’t have intercellular spaces. The central part of the cladode is presented by ligneous parenchyma. These features characterize A. brachyphyllus as glycohalophyte as well.
Key words Asparagus brachyphyllus, morphology of shoots, anatomy of cladode, xerophyte, glycohalophyte.
