Annotation Xenopus laevis larvae were kept in containers of 0,4 liters on different backgrounds (white, gray and black). The containers were kept in a closed box with artificial white light for 12 hours a day at 24 оС. Observations were carried out daily with a focus on pigmentary cells number on a lateral part of the animals’ trunk. The authors differentiate two periods in pigmentary cells development at the early stages. The first one lasts from the moment of hatching up to 45th stage. During this period there are only differentiations of melanophores from melanoblastes. The second period begins at 47th stage when separate mitoses take place. The study assesses the role of mitoses and differentiations for dermal melanophores number dynamics of animals that were kept on different backgrounds. For the first time, the authors reveal the influence of a background on the morphological reaction of pigmentary cells at the early stages of X. laevis development.
Key words Xenopus laevis, differentiation, mitosis, dermal melanophores.
