Annotation The article focuses on the phenomenon of dream in E. T. A. Hoffmann’s novel The Devil’s Elixir. The writer’s concept of dream was formed under the influence of the German psychologist and philosopher G. Shubert. The paper classifies dreams and describes their role in the novel. Dream is associated with theatricality of narration in the novel. Various classifications of dreams are based on tonality, duration, degree of prophecy, fantasy, and their role in the plot. According to Hoffmann, dream is the most important form of existence which combines reality and fantasy. Such understanding fully corresponds with his concept. Hoffmann compares Medard’s life with a dream, its separate episodes, instants, and states.
