The epoch of globalization and information has created challenges to which all religious
denominations responded with innovative discourses. Especially it concerns the countries with
changing political systems, in particular the countries of the former socialist camp. Buddhism in
Russia and in Buryatia has also undergone severe changes that are characterized by several specific
features. Studying contemporary Buryat Buddhism provides scholars with a unique opportunity to
examine different institutions in the most difficult moments of their development. The paper covers
a range of perspectives on the innovations and processes through which Buryat Buddhism has been
constructed in contemporary times. It is a multi-dimensional process. Along with many changes in
Buryat Buddhism the paper stresses an entirely new phenomenon connected with the emergence and
activities of Tibetan monks and erection of Tibetan monasteries in Buryatia. The article also gives a
brief overview of the history of relations between the Tibetan monks and the Buryat population.
