The article defines the functions of Buryat legends and traditions. Both genres perform an
informative function which is carried out during the act of communication through information
transfer in direct dialogue between the story-teller and the listener. Legends often inform of the
events of sacred character, traditions are connected with the worldly life. Legends perform a didactic
function expressed in the caution from the acts that go beyond the generally accepted norms of
the people. The performative function of the legend is connected with “reality designing”, i.e.
the legend, reflecting the reality, doesn’t remain indifferent to it; the legend invents it, carries out
various operations in order to convince the listener of the truth telling. These functions of legends
and traditions become genre-defining signs.
