The article deals with Buryat derivative words designating the supervising person and examines
how the content of nominations is connected with their internal form which is understood as a
distinct motivational sign which lies in the origins of the formation of derivatives. The analysis of
the internal form of the words in this thematic group (that reflects the nature of the logical-semantic
processes in derivation) reveals the specificity of the formation of these derivatives. The heart
of their creation is the image caused by a horizontal vision of the world connected with nomads’
representations about the leader as a person who is ahead of other people and who leads them. The
paper notes that not in all analyzed derivatives the given motivational sign is incorporated in the
word which is at the top of the entry, but it is necessarily formed in the motivating verb which forms
the substantivized participle with the meaning of a supervising person. The presented description of
derivational connections of the words in this thematic group suggests that the motivational sign is not
the actual meaning of the word element but a stable association, hence, the basis of the motivational
sign is formed by prototypical images defined by the extra-linguistic factors.
