The paper tackles the actual problem of verbal interpretation of artistic works – a verbal text
about a non-verbal art phenomenon (ecphrasis). The study focuses on the interpretation system
of contemporary arts and ecphrasis of Surikov’s works. The multilayered interpretation of a
work of art correlates with traditions, plots, national characteristics, style, technique, color, naïve
comprehension, and artistic biography of the creator. The study accentuates different kinds of
interpretation discourses and the role of rhetoric in arts comprehension.
