The study focuses on a fragment from the memoirs of Benedikt Dybovski, a Polish political
exile, doctor and zoologist. Doctor Benedikt Dybovski’s Diary is a significant historical source for
reconstructing the history of Transbaikalia. B. Dybovski is a world famous scientist, who was the
first to describe dozens of species of Transbaikalian fauna, and the first to discover the richest fauna
of Baikal. Dybovski wrote memoirs where he portrayed outstanding Transbaikalian persons – his
contemporaries. For the first time the author of the article presents the fragment of Dybovski’s
memoirs in her own translation into Russian, telling about his visit to Nerchinsk in 1867. The
fragment describes the Butins family of merchants in detail. They were talented businessmen and
patrons of science and culture in the second half of the 19th century and played an important role in
the economic development of Nerchinsk and Transbaikalia as a whole.
