The Russian Orthodox Church dioceses’ organization of their own mass media gives them an
additional opportunity of missionary, catechizing, enlightening, educational and other activities.
Functioning in our country since 2005 and being the stronghold of morality and pattern of cultural
behavior and dialogue with the audience, public Orthodox TV channels contribute to the moral
improvement of society as a whole and correlate the ethical systems of modern television community.
Public orthodox telecasting is of interest because it focuses not only on Christian believers, but also
a secular audience. This fact proves the relevance of the given research. The research objective is to
reveal specific features of the formation and development of Russian public Orthodox telecasting.
To achieve this goal the study examines the basic stages of the formation of the first Russian public
Orthodox TV channel “Soyuz”, analyses the policy of the given broadcasting company and reveals
the general tendencies of the development of the Russian Orthodox television. The study also
discusses the broadcasting concept of the TV channel “Souyz” and summarizes the main problems
this broadcasting company faces in the course of its activity. The results of this research may present
interest to researchers of the history of the Ural television journalism and to journalists working in
the Orthodox mass media.
