Annotation The article discusses the topical problem of the sociology of higher professional education sociology, namely the process of introducing tier education. It analyzes student contingents, covering bachelor, master and specialist programs. The author’s original method, based on the analysis of statistical data, allows ranking higher educational institutions according to quantitative assessment of their educational programs profiles. The method includes the following cognitive operations: the first step involves quantitative data analysing, the second – clustering universities according to student distribution by the educational programs they choose, and the third – determining the position of every university in All-Russian University Ranking. The author presents a comparative analysis of statistical data of pedagogical and humanitarian universities. This technique allows revealing objective indicators to compare educational institutions of higher professional education. These indicators are relevant for bachelor, master and specialist programs. The ranking includes 71 universities of the Russian Federation. The procedure of ranking universities has not only theoretical, but also practical significance in managing higher educational institutions.
