The goal of this paper is to study the structure and dynamics of the cases of disability due to
children’s and teenagers’ neurological disorders in the Zabaikalsky Krai for the period from 2003 to
2007 and the contribution of epilepsy to the formation of disability in case of neurological disorders.
Epilepsy and convulsive syndromes are among the most frequent diseases of the nervous system. In
Russia, in up to 60% of cases, neither convulsions control nor adequate social adjustment is achieved.
Most children with resistant epilepsy are disabled. But in case of early and adequate treatment, potentially
resistant epilepsy may not lead to serious consequences in the form of mental retardation and
behavioral disorders. During the period from 2003 to 2007 the Zabaikalsky Krai registered an increase
in disability cases due to neurological diseases. But the number of children’s and teenagers’ disability
cases due to epilepsy has decreased.
