Biodiversity has become one of the most common concepts in the scientific literature during the last decade. Biological diversity of fish is closely linked to the organization of ecosystems. Abiotic parameters of the environment determine the existence of certain fish species capable of adapting to different existence conditions. Fish fauna at the upper Amur basin is characterized by significant species diversity. However, biology of individual fish species has been studied insufficiently. Among them is eight-whiskered stone loach (Lefua costata), which is one of the rare and few species of fish fauna of Trans-Baikal Territory. Finding of this species in Soktui-Milozan characterized by low water temperatures and low food supply is of great interest.
The study shows that despite its small number, lefua lives in various bodies of water, both salt and fresh, and this indicates its great ecological plasticity. However, the lefua area in Transbaikalia has a spot character. The paper presents a dimensional structure, nutrition, and fish fertility. The detailed morphological description of lefua is given. The paper shows that lefua is characterized by a high degree of morphological variability, as well as different linear weights, which is probably due to the presence of different ecological conditions of water bodies in which lefua inhabits.
