Annotation The paper considers the terms and factors influencing the reception of Buddhist ideas in Russia’s culture in the context of its development. It singles out the following factors of the reception of Buddhism in Russia: the missionary work of the Russian Orthodox Church, the assimilation of Buddhist ideas in philosophical discourse, the reflection of Buddhist motives and reminiscences in literature, the work of Buryat intelligentsia and spiritual leaders, the emergence of neo-Buddhist conceptions, public and educational activities of Buddhist organizations. The paper explains the importance of analyzing these questions as part of the development of Russian culture. The paper analyzes various approaches and positions on the notion of the “Russian culture”, its links with this phenomenon, the factors which determine the formation of the Russian culture, its vitality and prospects for development, including the perspective of the national and cultural foundations of Russia and its future. The focus is on the controversies around the definition of the Russian culture and its characteristics in contemporary Russian research and the need to determine the historical and current role of the interaction of diverse cultures and reception of various religions.
