Annotation The most common form of academic writing is an abstract. The abstract is generally the first thing people read before they start reading the whole article. The abstract written in English is often an only text helping Englishspeaking people to understand a paper written in Russian. Writing abstracts is in fact very important for researchers, graduate and postgraduate students who have to present the results of their research in a foreign language. This paper aims to examine some features of teaching writing abstracts in English. The study sought to collect data and learning experiences based upon intensive studying of literature in methods of teaching English for non-linguistic majors. Our methodology included, firstly, focus on qualities of good abstracts. We presented authentic materials to introduce some features of abstracts (both descriptive and informative). Secondly, some complexes of specific exercises for teaching academic writing for graduate and postgraduate students are given. The method we applied involved analysis of the parts of abstracts according to IMRAD format which is the most prominent norm for structuring a scientific journal article. The results suggest that the most interesting activity in teaching writing abstracts in English is editing authentic materials (abstracts of research papers) in groups. This and other activities help in making drafts of students’ own abstracts to be presented at a future conference. This study lays the foundation for further research into the formation, development and mastering the skills of academic writing which are very useful for graduate and postgraduate students, university lecturers and researchers.
