Annotation The article is devoted to the matter concerning the essence of distance learning. To determine the specifics of this type of training, we turned to the approaches available in methodology of teaching languages. As a result, we succeeded in describing in detail the potential of distance learning as applied to mastering foreign-language communication. The author managed to prove that it consists of providing a real abundant, intensive process of communication with various communication partners, including native speakers. We succeeded in demonstratively describing the fact that if any communication takes place, which is abundant in distance learning, it is important to know that there is rich exchange of information in a foreign language. The perception/transmission of text messages is typical of distance communication. In other words, only written communication with the help of the Internet is carried out. This process is effectively implemented through the application of the educational ability of reading. In the article, we characterized the educational ability of reading both from the standpoint of the speed of the learning process and from the standpoint of achieving adequacy of understanding.
