Annotation The article shows the important role classical gymnasiums played in the development of education in Transbaikalia in the second half of the 19th – early 20th centuries. This process was related with the social and economic interests of the government in the development of the region, government policies in the educational sphere. The European educational system with a compulsory attendance of ancient languages not only extended a number of educational institutions, but also influenced significant growth of the general educational and cultural level of students. The main objective of the work is to study the principles of the organization and activities of the classical gymnasium in the educational system. In this work, based on archival materials, the author has analyzed the education and performance of Chita boys’ gymnasium using the example of teaching one of the five main subjects – the Latin language. The research of the gymnasium educational system development helped to realize the important role of classical educational institutions in the mental, moral, aesthetic, intellectual, artistic development of the gymnasium students. The author concluded that in the beginning of the 20th century, classical gymnasiums made a significant contribution to educational systems in general, and in Transbaikalia in particular, and helped to raise generations of intellectuals, with a cultural background based on classical traditions.
