Annotation Globalisation and integration processes taking place in Russia and the world community contribute to the growth of cultural contacts and mutual cultural enrichment on the one hand, and they are able to destroy the foundations of national and cultural unity of a society on the other hand. This circumstance results in the consciousness marginalisation and intolerance towards other peoples and their cultures. This situation actualizes the problem of national self-consciousness development of the younger generation. The questions of “national spirit”, “national character”, and “national self-consciousness” exercised the minds of many Russian scientists. The article presents the ideas of both representatives of philosophy and pedagogues. The authors analyze the essence of national self-consciousness, its structure, which includes emotional and value representations and attitudes, information and cultural knowledge and worldview and behavioral attitudes. Based on this analysis, the conditions necessary for the national consciousness formation are identified. The main one is persons’ integration into the space of their culture. This process becomes more effective in the presence of another culture. The interaction with it helps students to realize themselves in their own culture. The authors investigate the role of foreign language learning in this process.
Key words nation, national self-consciousness, national character, education, culture, foreign language
