Annotation The realities of modernity put forward fundamentally new requirements for the organization of foreign language education. One of the actual tasks in accordance with the requirements of the educational standard is he compulsory study of a second foreign language in the 5-9 grades. The article analyzes the requirements of regulatory documents to the results of the study of a second foreign language, substantiates the importance of its introduction in the context of the development of linguistic, analytical and cognitive qualities of an individual. The author points to the existence of a certain specificity of teaching the first and second foreign language, the presence of interference, the need for taking into consideration and transfer of previously formed skills and abilities. The article discusses the problems faced by the educational organizations in the process of introducing a second foreign language, one of which is personnel. By now, there is the necessary educational and methodological support for the organization of a second foreign language teaching. The article indicates the factors that influence the choice of a second foreign language, one of which is geopolitical position of a particular region, regional conditions and needs. The effect of this factor is the introduction of Chinese as a second foreign language in schools in the Transbaikal Region. The study of two foreign languages is not a fundamentally new phenomenon for the national education system. In the pre-Soviet period, multilingualism was the norm of secondary education in Russia. The study of the history of teaching several foreign languages has the undoubted prospect of using the accumulated historical and pedagogical knowledge in the context of solving urgent problems facing the modern system of foreign language education.
