Annotation The article analyzes the effectiveness of the use of associative material in the process of foreign language education. The subject of the study is the effectiveness and expediency of using associative dictionaries in the process of teaching a foreign language. The article considers the linguometodic aspect of the associative-verbal potential of vocabulary in the process of teaching foreign languages to the age group of 20–25 years. The relevance of the study is explained by the need to find new approaches in teaching foreign languages in order to increase its effectiveness. The authors emphasize that the latter is also measured by overcoming cross-cultural differences, which can cause difficulties both during language learning and in the process of its practical use. It is necessary to develop such methods that will ensure effective communication of representatives of different linguistic cultures. The purpose of the study is to identify the linguistic and methodological potential of associative material by analyzing the psychologically real meanings of the lexeme “помощь” in the minds of representatives of Russian and Italian linguistic cultures. The novelty of the research is determined by the idea of using associative dictionaries in teaching foreign languages not only to linguistic specialists, but also to a wide range of students. The research material includes data from explanatory dictionaries of the Russian and Italian languages, as well as data from a free associative experiment. The main research methods were descriptive and comparative methods, definitional analysis, as well as the method of associative experiment. The authors come to the conclusion about the relevance and effectiveness of teaching a foreign language by using associative data at the stage of vocabulary development. Associative dictionaries carry culturally marked information that is not present in other types of dictionaries, and thereby contribute to the clarification of lexicographic information essential for teaching a foreign language.
