Annotation The article analyzes the problems of selection, upbringing and education of the elite in a modern transitive society; it updates the issue of education of nationally oriented elites in the context of the national-historical pedagogical tradition; the article reveals the tendencies of modern education that negatively affect on the upbringing of the highest stratum, which are: strengthening of pragmatic and individualistic principles, replacement of higher values by market ones, whereas the meaning and the main mission (anthropological, axiological and cultural-creating) of education are lost, education is being transformed into services and goods. Consequently, reflexive-value, educational aspects of the educational process were underestimated, which made it possible to form a system of personal and professional values of the individual. It is shown that de-ideologization and de-idealization of the upbringing process led to a violation of the most important principles of the Russian national-historical pedagogical tradition – the ideological conformity of upbringing; the priority of moral education over intellectual (which, in turn, should be carried out at a high level of difficulty); developing a sense of mutual involvement with the surrounding majority, which goes back to the idea of conciliarity; fostering moral responsibility for the results of one’s own transforming activity. It is concluded that the cognition and analysis of the topic in the context of elitology and elite pedagogy, as well as reflection of the national-historical pedagogical tradition of educating the elite in line with the scope of problems, will make it possible to identify, describe, understand, interpret and systematically implement productive historical and pedagogical ideas in modern conditions, which allowed to ensure the progress of Russian society and national culture back at that time.
