Annotation The article presents and analyzes the facts characterizing the process of development of commercial education in Russia at the end of the XIX and beginning of the XX century. The appeal to this theme continues to remain relevant because some of its aspects which have not received their exhaustive description. The activity of trade schools is of undoubted interest. Understanding their experience is of practical importance in the context of improving the quality of training in the areas and specialties of trade economic and managerial spheres. The issues of the development of commercial education and in particular, the creation of trade schools aroused considerable interest of contemporaries and were widely covered in historical, pedagogical, statistical and journalistic publications dating from the beginning of the XX century. The current legislation gave a wide scope to private and public initiative in the establishment of trade schools. Representatives of entrepreneurship and industry not only initiated and financially supported trade schools but also took part in the formation of training programs taking into account practical needs of the region. The course of study at the trade school included a wide list of general and special subjects the choice of which was dictated by local needs. The analysis of the programs of trade schools showed that foreign languages: English, French, German. The number of hours allocated for their study in some cases exceeded the special disciplines. The training course was designed to form practical skills and abilities in various types of speech activity primarily in speaking. The study of professional vocabulary, preparation for reading and understanding commercial documents, training in conducting commercial correspondence allow us to speak about the professionally oriented nature of the foreign language course. The awareness of the importance of studying this subject in the training of personnel capable of interacting with foreign partners was reflected in pedagogical discussions aimed at finding the most effective ways of teaching a foreign language in trade schools.
