Annotation An analysis of the existing practices of planning and organizing career guidance in educational institutions, from school to university, does not give confidence in its effective work and a real systematic approach to guiding students. Professional self-determination is analyzed as a basic element of life self-determination, capable of controlling the quality of job satisfaction, and, consequently, psychological well-being not only at the stage of professional training, but also at all sub-stages of the life of mature (working) people. The basis of professional self-determination is the ability of the personality of a school graduate to adequately measure the psychophysical capabilities of his body, professional preferences and desires with the need to achieve the required result when performing the labor functions defined by the Professional Standard. The purpose of the study is to establish the level of gender differences in the choice of areas of study and the impact of motivational aspects on professional trajectories. The study involved 130 full-time first-year students of the Transbaikal State University. The developed questionnaire consisted of socio-demographic data of respondents and a package of questions determined by motivational and professional affiliation. Information was collected remotely using Google Forms. A positive and significant relationship was established between the chosen areas of study, so technical specialties significantly prevailed in the choice of a future specialty (p < 0.01) among boys, as well as statistically significant gender differences in the availability of knowledge about their future profession, where girls most seriously and consciously approached in responses (p < 0.05), emphasizing the need to have more complete information about the intended profession. Reliable differences in the choice of a profession were obtained: for boys it is high earnings, for girls it is career growth and the opportunity to reveal their abilities. As a result, self-determination, for the students of the studied groups, plays an important role in the definition and observance of life rules, personal growth and striving to solve pressing problems.
