Education for Sustainable Development is aimed at fostering individuals’ personal development, the ability to anticipate the consequences of their actions and to independently find solutions to various problems. The implementation of Education for Sustainable Development relies heavily on teaching staff, who both educate others and need to educate themselves to keep up with the constantly evolving demands of their profession. The aim of our work is to identify the role of special professional development programs for higher education teachers in implementing Education for Sustainable Development. The study employed comparative-analytical and content analysis to examine the final works of teachers. The analysis has revealed that teachers are most interested in the themes of forms, methods and means of education. The majority of the final papers focused on online learning effectiveness, which is attributed to the need to utilize modern digital technologies that are constantly improving. Therefore, it is necessary for teachers to enhance their qualifications. The continuous development of teachers fully complies with the principles of the concept of lifelong learning: learning to know, learning to do, learning to live together, and learning to be. These principles are consistent with the following sustainable development goals: goal 4 – Quality Education, goal 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth, goal 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production and goal 17 – Partnerships for the Goals. Continuous knowledge acquisition and the ability to act and live together are necessary to achieve these goals. Since the concept of Lifelong Learning was adopted by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in 1960, much earlier than the Strategy of Education for Sustainable Development, the concept of lifelong learning can be considered a prerequisite for developing Education for Sustainable Development.
