| Annotation |
V. V. Nabokov’s novel Despair includes some references to solar myths about Icarus, Phaethon,
Bellerophon, and Sisyphus. The myths are not retold in the novel; they are referred to through
multilingual puns. V. V. Nabokov addresses them to answer the question about the nature of art and
asserts that its purpose is to awaken spiritually dormant people. The author concludes that according
to V. V. Nabokov, chimera personifies artistic creativity, the understanding of which was the main
theme in the writer’s works. The artist strives for unattainable perfection and achieves it. The writer
expands the boundaries beyond the limits for his readers and once again, like Sisyphus rolls uphill a
stone-sun of a new work of art to awaken the sleeping spirit of man to find himself.
