The article reviews the outcomes of the Bolsheviks organized armed uprising of reserve military
units in July 1917 in Petrograd (now St. Petersburg). The newspaper campaign, which began with
“revelations” of the Bolsheviks as German spies, was organized in response to the coup attempt
undertaken in the course of the uprising. In this campaign, the Provisional Government used the
newspapers as a tool against its political opponents, the Bolsheviks, and at the same time as a means
to exert pressure on the opponents by interfering with the release of their publications.
