Annotation The point of issue in the article is the determination of the role of social activity of a future teacher in the process of forming a competitive person in new conditions of a society development on the grounds of theoretical propositions and practical experience. The article deals with the period of the 1960s and the 1980s while researching into the problem of developing social activity of a future teacher. The notion ‘social activity’ of a person is considered from the point of theoretical approaches of philosophy, psychology and pedagogy. The author states that the theory of social activity of a person at that period was connected with the notions of ‘public activity’ and ‘civic activity’. The article considers that modern pedagogy includes an activity approach in the discourse of a future teacher’s social activity which suggests new methods of solving the problem such as voluntary action, competition, SWOT-analysis, portfolio, training.
