Annotation The article is devoted to analysis of reading competence formation in pupils of the fourth classes. The article presents the results of training work of pupils of the fourth classes of “Gymnasium No. 21” of Chita. The younger school pupils were invited to write training work, which is offered in the Workshop on carrying out the All-Russian verification work on literary reading to assess the reading competence formation of younger schoolchildren. Tasks of training work are directed to identification of such skills of reader’s competence formation as skill of reading (ability to read is silent, possession of main types of reading), erudition (idea of literary concepts, their use and understanding), skills and abilities of actually reader’s activity (perception, interpretation and assessment of an artwork). The results of this study have showed that the younger schoolchildren have got through the training worktasks. The younger school pupils with a good level have formed reading competence. Some pupils (18 %) have made mistakes in writing training work, which are related to ignorance of concepts of “comparison”, “antonym”, inability to select synonyms to the word, to find words with a portable value. There are students who confuse the concepts of “type of text”, “style of text”, cannot quickly navigate the text and find answers to questions in it. In this regard, it is proposed to carry out constant monitoring of thereading competenceformation, which will allow to obtain an objective picture of the acquisition of reading competence of younger schoolchildren; to identify factors affecting the quality of reading skills and skills; to determine the dynamics of indicators of reading competence formation of younger schoolchildren.
