Annotation The paper considers speech segmentation of the sounding object in terms of the general problem of generating speech and the mechanism of the speech generating process. The stages of speech stream segmentation are the syllable, the word, the phrase and supra-phrasal units. The problem of speech segmentation is actual, but its solution in science is ambiguous. Optimum segmentation of the sounding object takes into consideration the factor of variability of speech segments and their key characteristics. The paper highlights that the verbal accent is one of the phonetic types of stress in the broadest sense of this term and is a means of the rhythmic organization of the word unlike its other types which are connected with the units of larger spatial extent – the syntagma, the phrase, the text, distinguished on the basis of, first of all, semantic and notional criteria. The function of the verbal accent is culminative.
Key words speech segmentation, sounding object, micro- and macro-segmentation, speech stream, co-articulation process, mechanism of sounding semantic information, \'\'contingent of movements\'\', speech signal.
