Annotation Taiwan (Republic of China) is one of the most highly developed countries in Asia. This country has achieved undoubted success in economic and cultural, as well as social and political fields. The phenomenon of Taiwanese modernization is connected with the strengthening of the religious factor in society after a period of highly regulated religious life under the dictatorship of Chiang Kai-shek. This paper describes the current state of Buddhism in Taiwan with its increasing role and importance in social life during the age of democratization (from the 1980s to present) and discusses the historical and doctrinal background of Buddhist modernization in Taiwan. The author concludes that the doctrine of “humanistic Buddhism” has had a great impact on the formation of contemporary Buddhist schools and analyzes the specificity of modern religious organizations in Taiwan on the example of the Dharma Drum Mountain Buddhist Association.
Key words Taiwan, modernization, humanistic Buddhism, Dharma Drum Mountain, Buddhist education, welfare, social inclusiveness, laity.
