Annotation This paper describes the general state of religious affairs in Taiwan (unrecognized Republic of China). A brief overview of the history and current state of several major religious denominations is given, in particular Buddhism, Daoism, Islam, Christianity, Yiguandao, Chinese folk religion and aboriginal beliefs. The main features of state religious regulation in different periods of Taiwan’s history are observed. Special attention is paid to the religious legislation in the Republic of China (Taiwan), and the measures taken by the state to improve it. In general, the spiritual environment in Taiwan is regarded to be rather prosperous as a result of the strengthening of civil liberties and general democratization of the political and social life of the island nation in the last 25 years. Taiwanese society managed to get rid of the consequences of the totalitarian regime that had ruled the religious sphere by strong repressive methods for 40 years.
Key words Taiwan, freedom of conscience, religious pluralism, tolerance, Buddhism, Taoism, Yiguandao, Christianity, religious legislation, folk religion, Aboriginal beliefs
