The idea of Dostoevsky’s influence on French scribers-modernists is well learned, especially
in the aspect of influence on the writer, the literature critic and the philologist Andre
Gide. For the first time this influence is examined on the example of the novel by Alain-
Fournier “The Big Meaulnes”, and the theme of the childish associations, organized like
a “spiritual family”, is taken for the comparative analysis. Firstly, the resemblance of the structures of childish associations, the characters and the ages, the educative level and
the spiritual resemblance of the childish association’s leaders are revealed. Secondly, the
resemblance of the moral changes in the of hero-teenager’s soul as a result of his contacts
with the childish association’s leaders is also revealed. The article analyses the reasons
of the characters and situations resemblance, and comes to the conclusion that it can
be result both of Dostoyevsky’s influence and the typological similarity. Consequently, the
typological similarity can be explained by the similarity of the spirituals types of the personages
created by Dostoyevsky and Alain-Fournier. The polyphonycal structure of the novel
by Alain-Fournier takes the polyphony of Dostoevsky’s novel. For example, the polyphony
of the hero’s consciousness, the triple-based dialogue, and the presence of five-parted
conclave’s situations, typical for the poetic of Dostoevsky are revealed. The author uses
the methodology of literary analysis and the new approach, using the cultural facts and
the linguistic peculiarities of the French language. Consequently, the artistic peculiarities
of the novel allow relating the novel «The Big Meaulnes» to the literature for adults, but
not for children. This conclusion opposes to the French philological tradition to relate this
novel to the literature for children, because the polyphony relates to the level of the dialogic
consciousness, typical for an adult person.
