Annotation The article presents the results of theoretical analysis and research sources that enhance our knowledge about the phenomenon of volunteering in the plane of the traditions of Russian and foreign psychology. We systematized theoretical definitions and basic theory, expanding the understanding of the psychological content of the volunteer work and personality volunteer and formulated operational definitions of true volunteering. The social and psychological conditions of the true volunteering and psychological determinants of behavior of the active volunteer are studied. Russian scientific tradition suggests that the historical, social, systemic and pedagogical approaches allow us to consider volunteering as an integral historical and cultural phenomenon of Russian mentality and Orthodox spirituality, a subject of public and private charity, rooted in the history of philanthropy and patronage, the establishment of institutions of public scorn and social protection, development of traditions of selfless service to the citizens and the Fatherland. These research approaches according to the number of submitted scientific papers, dissertations, and articles were sufficiently developed in Russian science. But there have always been and will be the most popular psychological studies that explain the motivation of the people to the true selfless activity, the subject of this activity and peculiarities of the volunteers’ age characteristics with the focus on their personal positions and intrapersonal mechanisms. The author who is a practitioner with 20 years of experience in volunteer activities prepared theoretical justification for the training and selection of true student volunteers for the society.
