Article type
Annotation The author of the article considers such word combinations naming ritual actions as to sit down on a path, to drink to the bottom, to catch freebie. The necessity to study these units is caused by their special position in Russian: on the one hand, they represent linguistic units possessing certain grammatical and semantic features; on the other hand, they are linguocultural phenomena that reflect culturally determined native speakers’ representations about designated situations of ritual action. The purpose of this article is to define the linguocultural specificity of the word combinations under study. The basis of the linguocultural potential of the studied units is a cultural connotation that reflects the relation of the native speaker to the subject of the nomination and the existence conditions (temporal, geographical, economic, cultural) of the given phenomena in corresponding linguoculture, and marks the denotative, significative and connotative components of the meaning. In this work, the introspective method and the method of contextual analysis are used to reveal cultural connotations and estimate the linguocultural potential of the units from the native speaker’s point of view. In addition, the cultural connotation of the word combinations under study is brought to light based on the conclusions of the scientists who consider these expressions nationally unique. The article defines the localization sphere of the linguocultural potential in the meaning of the examined structures. The author concludes that the cultural connotation can be manifested in the meaning of one of the lexemes that form the word combination while motivating the semantics of the whole word combination, or it can exist only in the meaning of the whole expression if the meanings of its constituent words are not free, phraseologically connected or if they don’t motivate the semantics of the whole expression.
