Annotation In this article the author carries out culturological analysis of an urgent problem for China: a need for increase of vocational education status in modern Chinese society. During the subject research, the author has revealed the socio-cultural factors which created a certain relation of the Chinese to vocational education. These factors include representations and values which are significant elements of the Chinese national mentality: personal and family reputation, ideas of public hierarchy, etc. The author analyzes the peculiarities of traditional Chinese culture and the national mentality using the principle of historicism and a comparative-historical method. He reveals that the Chinese traditionally underestimate the role of vocational education in development of the country. This fact causes the loss of occupational prestige and makes the graduates having vocational education uncompetitive in the labor market.
Key words vocational education, mentality, traditional Chinese culture, values, “personal reputation”, social hierarchy.
