Annotation The article describes mental changes taking place in man’s psyche as a result of long-term impact caused by ecologically unfavourable conditions. The problem to preserve mental potential has become urgent in ecologically deformed living conditions due to the ecological crisis facing the developed world. The principle of consistency in the eco-psychological approach to the development of mentality, an approach that takes into account both natural and social factors of living environment, reveals a general tendency to reduce the level of mental activity of people in ecologically unfavorable areas. This tendency is a manifestation of the weakening of mental activity due to the activation of the need for energy, in the first place, and the biological level of the systemic personality organization under inadequate living conditions. Lowering of mental activity also indicates the minimizing psychological adaptation of people, living in ecologically unfriendly regions. The lowered mentality indicators are a variant of regional adaptation norm.
Key words ecologically troubled region, living environment, “man-living environment” system, mentality, psychological status, reduced level of mental activity, minimizing psychological adaptation.
