Annotation The scientific article presents the results of an educational experiment conducted at the university for three years, in which students of the “Journalism” program of Togliatti State University took part. It reports on the projective method of working with thinking and the tools for its implementation, which were used to develop creative and critical thinking in students of higher education. The purpose of the article is to describe the specifics of the experiment on the use of projective tools in the educational process and to confirm the effectiveness of their use through the use of questionnaires and focus groups. The relevance of this experiment was determined by the specifics of the educational training, which has been implemented at the university since 2017. Dual training (a combination of theoretical training and continuous practice based on the university media holding) requires students already in the second year of study to demonstrate not only professional competencies in creating news media content, but also high communicative efficiency, elements of creative and critical thinking. These skills are necessary for students to successfully complete educational journalistic practice, which begins in the second year of study. At the same time, approximately 30 percent of students have difficulties in demonstrating soft skills. And on average, 35 percent of students have difficulties in working with information; students find it difficult to apply the theoretical knowledge they have acquired in practice. In the process of journalistic practice, students need to demonstrate the ability to think independently and systematically, without using cliches, and to demonstrate soft skills. In this regard, there was a need to strengthen the psychological preparation of students during the training process and organize the work of a student training group within the framework of project activities. The results of the experiment indicate an increase in the level of a critical approach in analyzing information and revealing the creative potential of students. It is reported that the educational experiment will continue in the direction of increasing the communicative effectiveness of bachelor’s students majoring in “Journalism”.
