Annotation The revived interest in the issue of emotional unresponsiveness among school students in the methodology of literature teaching is driven not only by social factors, such as pragmatization, technologization, and digitization within the system of education, but also by the regulatory requirements of federal standards. One of the educational outcomes stated in the basic general education standards is the developed emotional intelligence of students. In scientific research and practical developments by educators, there are several techniques that contribute to the development of students’ emotional sphere; however, their unsystematic use hinders the achievement of the specified educational outcome. The aim of this article is to determine the creative potential of techniques for developing the emotional intelligence of school students while studying the programmatic epic work “Biryuk” by I. S. Turgenev in the 7th grade. Achieving this goal is facilitated by general pedagogical theoretical methods – dialectical and heuristic; specific methods for teaching literature – problem-based and research-based. The author uses the project-based learning and implements various methodological forms of activity for teachers and students in literature classes as empirical methods. The article presents the structure of emotional intelligence in accordance with reading activities and the skills that comprise it, which allows to formulate an adapted definition of the concept of “emotional intelligence” for literature teaching methodology. The identification of skills within the structure of emotional intelligence ensures the consistency of its development process and the systematic use of techniques that shape the emotional sphere of students. Using I. S. Turgenev’s short story “Biryuk” in the 7th grade as an example, the author defines the creative potential of techniques for developing emotional intelligence, such as the “double diary”, “empathy map” and “cloze test”. Their application in the study of a literary work not only contributes to the formation of students’ emotional sphere but also aids in understanding value orientations as a component of literary and personal development.
