The paper describes the means of rendering the living language in R. Senchin’s novel
The Yeltyshevs, analyzes the general tendency of the stylistics and the language of modern prose
illustrated by concrete examples from the novel The Yeltyshevs, and suggests possible ways to
render these linguistic peculiarities in the German language. The author analyzes the major language
processes of modern Russian prose, including grammatical shifts (substantivization, syntactical
shifts), and graphic marking. The use of colloquial and children’s speech plays an important role in
the novel. The author concludes that the main translator’s aim in rendering the author’s style is his
comprehension of the verbal matter of the novel. The language processes occurring in the language
of modern Russian prose cannot be always precisely translated into another language; therefore,
some elements of the author’s individual world view are lost in translation.
