Article type
Annotation The article discusses problems and perspectives of popularization of science in contemporary Russia and more precisely, the communication between Russian scientists and mass media. The article is based on qualitative research (method of unstructured interviews) conducted among scientists and journalists. The research aims to reveal the existing practices of interaction between scientists and journalists (how these practices are conceived by the actors), their understanding of goals, forms and probable obstacles of science communication, assess the subjective readiness of both sides for collaboration. The main results are the following: despite the recent tendency to establish new and to support existing popular scientific resources (magazines, TV programs, the Internet resources, etc.) communication among scientists and journalists suffers from some difficulties, which have socio-psychological roots. Scientists and journalists are biased against each other and are characterized by the lack of motivation for cooperation, they don’t understand goals and interests of each other. Leading Russian scientific centers don’t have elaborated programs to promote science to society. These obstacles have negative impact on popular scientific production.
Key words science, journalism, popularization of science, science communication, qualitative methods, social psychology
