Annotation In the article, the social importance of a speech pathologist profession in the society is revealed. The attention is drawn to uniqueness and demand of these specialists working with physically disabled children. The statistical data allowing to determine the number of physically disabled children who need the qualified help of the speech pathologist are provided. There were defined some categories of children with various deviations, such as impairing hearing; impairing sight; disordered speech; mentally retarded; disability of musculoskeletal system; emotionally disturbed; multiple deviations; mentally retarded. The tasks of professional social and pedagogical work of the speech pathologist are designated. Requirements to professional activity of the speech pathologist (orientation to social progress, development of new pedagogical thinking, creative research of pedagogical experience and innovations in the field of vocational education, enhancement of pedagogical skill); socially and professionally important qualities of the personality (empathy, tolerance, humanity, mercy, spirituality, etc.), professional and valuable orientations were determined. Humanistic and social components of professional competence of the speech pathologist are described in detail. Two-level training of teachers (majoring in special education-speech pathology) in the field of psychological, pedagogical and social support of the development of physically disabled children in a local higher education institution is given. The ways of professional training of future speech pathologists on the basis of the core educational organizations are shown.
