Annotation The article deals with the urgent problem of improving approaches to the formation of students’ value system and upbringing of a harmonious personality in the literary education process. The authors refer to the Christian values inherent in the genre of the Christmas story and fix upon the short stories of the 2nd half of the 20th century: “Danya” by V. Belov (Russia), “Farolitos of Christmas” by R. Anaya (USA), “Circle of Wonder: A Native American Christmas Story” by N. S. Momaday (USA). Revealing the signs of the Christian cultural code in Christmas stories provides means for realization the pedagogical potential of the literary works within the framework of culturological personality-oriented education. In the course of the study, the methods of literary analysis of the text were used for revealing main sense-making images and motives within the axiological approach, and the comparative-typological method, which enables to highlight the general essential features of the Christmas story and the typological features of Christian values’ representation in the text. The results highlight the images and motives, traditional for the genre of the Christmas story, representing the units of the Christian cultural code. The study evidences that the images of a child, home, a family, a Christmas tree, a joint meal; motives of trial, miracle, healing, finding joy and love play the key role in the ideological content and imaginative expression of the Christmas story. Due to the representation of the Christian cultural code in a literary text, writers assert the basic values of the Christian world. The research materials might be suitable for the design of lesson and extracurricular forms of children’s reading in accordance with the goals of modern personality-oriented culturological education. The authors develop a project of extracurricular reading lesson, based on the principle of a dialogue of cultures and focused on the formation of children’s readiness for value self-determination in the context of culture.
