Annotation The article highlights the problems of the mass expulsion of students with disabilities after the first examination session. The system of vocational guidance activities should ensure the formation of sustainable self-determination in the specifics of future labour, adequately psychological needs and physical capabilities, as well as taking into account possible rehabilitation options and a gradual improvement in the quality of life. The results of the diagnostics showed that the professional self-concept of freshmen students is unbalanced and cannot serve as a support in solving the problems of training and communication. The authors have determined that effective career guidance work with people with disabilities and young people with disabilities is ensured by the implementation of three successive stages in the development of professional self-determination: 1) development of applicants’ understanding and acceptance of their physical and psychological disorders, followed by understanding how to harmonize them, not “psycho-expensive”, to include them in the context of their own life activity; 2) development of the professional self-concept of the applicant due to understanding the measures of their future performance, exposure to stress factors, ability to function effectively under risk, information uncertainty, team working conditions; 3) stabilization of the professional self-concept due to reflection and making an informed decision on the acquisition of a profession. The article discusses the importance of creating an Interdepartmental Commission under the Ministry of Science and Education of regions with the aim of assisting professional self-determination and choosing an individual educational route for applicants with disabilities and disabled children, given their medical and psychophysical limitations. Differentiated vocational guidance work with applicants will provide a reduction in deductions of students with health problems and a more rational distribution of budget places in areas of study when entering universities.
