Annotation Professional adaptation is the process of an individual adaptation to the sphere of professional activity. Problems of professional adaptation are covered in the psychological and educational literature, as work in the workplace affects various aspects of human mental activity. Changes in the external environment, including in the sphere of self-consciousness and attitude of the individual, are perceived and evaluated, both consciously and unconsciously. The article describes the initial stage of entry into the professional activities of students practicing at the school. The study was aimed at studying the psychological characteristics of students’ professional adaptation. On a representative sample (n = 186), the levels and the corresponding characteristics of professional social and psychological adaptation were identified. The features of the student’s perception as the highest value of the subject – subject relations in the teacher’s professional activities, the teacher’s work, as the creative process of creating relationships as the leading parameters of the adaptation process of students in the direction of “Teacher education” are shown. The relationship between levels of adaptation and the mechanisms of psychological protection of students is revealed. The mechanisms of psychological protection demonstrate the psychological characteristics of students’ professional adaptation, which are beyond awareness. The results of the study can be used in the development of teaching materials in the process of preparing teachers in higher education.
